New Symbol for Indian Currency Rupee Finalized
Until now Indian currency Rupee has been symbolized differently in different languages, in Hindi as abbreviation 'ru' and in all other languages as 'Rs'. To add to complexity the symbol changed for singular and plural as 'Re' and 'Rs'. There was no standard language-independent symbol for the Rupee. The Government of India thus decided to standardize the symbol and asked public opinion on March 6, 2009 on what should the new symbol look like. Since then the final design was awaited.
Today Information and Broadcasting minister Ambika Soni unveiled the new symbol for Indian currency rupee based on design by an IIT post graduate D Uday Kumar. The symbol is the devnagari character 'ra' crossed by an horizontal line near the top.
Let's see when the new symbol makes it to Unicode standard and the fonts so that the whole web recognizes it.
