Databases allow datatypes that can store unicode data, then why was it that while MS-Access successfully stored Unicode data whereas MS-SQL server failed when I first tried. See how to handle Unicode data in Storing Unicode Data in Databases.

After of years of existence of internet most of the dictionary words domain seem to have been already taken. Do you too think so? Check for words from your regional language dictionary as domain names need not necessarily be ASCII one but can be any language text in Unicode. For details see

IME (or Input Method Editor) is an excellent way to type in Regional language text. But what to you do when a few text boxes expect English inputs while others regional inputs... do you need to switch IME on and off every now and then. Not if the software you develop takes care of automatic switching. Switching IME during runtime details how to achieve automatic switching of IME.

Most multilingual softwares allow you to set language options but require you to restart application before language change is effective. If you need immediate UI language change Changing UI Language during Runtime is one of the way to do it.

But what if the two languages you aer switching have different orientation of RTL (Right to Left) and LTR(Left to Right)? Mirroring Form for RTL languages as Arabic detilas how you can switch control locations.

Google Translate gives you facility to translate selected text or entire page between available languages. You can use JavaScript to provide translation button on your site/blog to translate current the current page details of which is here at Google Translate

Google Desktop supports interface in many languages. Google Desktop Now in Hindi came when Hindi language interface was added.

Google Reader allows you to send selected posts from RSS feed you read to your friends or share them and publish as RSS feed for others to subscribe. Read about these in More reasons to use Google Reader

After a long gap since my last post on Microsoft Project came MS Project : Define General Working Time that shows how calendar can be modified globally or resourse-wise.

Get into Technorati Top 100 in 24 Hours was the first post that brought this blog in Growing Blogs list of botd.wordpress.com. "in 24 hours" is just for attracting attention. Applying that in the timeframe may be practical but you cannot get away without getting banned by Technorati... But since Technorati never ever seemed to resolve this problem, you can easily exploit it to get higher rank by avoiding attracting attention.

WinAPI functions saw a slowdown in terms of posts on this blog and subsequent two post were WinAPI : DrawText & DrawTextEx and WinAPI : The Font Object

Google rebranded it's "personalized homepage" as iGoogle. What’s in a Name?

5th of February was called for as a CSS "edun" day (read quoted text in reverse, I don't feel eager to categorize my site for "tluda" content ) where all blogs were asked to remove CSS for a day. Having upgraded to Custom CSS I had the option to do so. No CSS on 5th April.

Microsoft came up with SilverLight to compete with Flash. Read about it here at Flash plus more with Microsoft Silverlight. I haven't looked back if it really succeeded or not.

The Flash Chart on Wordpress.com Dashboard are attractive and useful. See where did it originated in Flash Charts

New Features on Wordpress.com was update on new features added to wordpress.com and Twice the categories was reporting of a bug there.

[digg=http://www.digg.com/tech_news/Get_into_Technorati_Top_100_in_24_Hours/blog] Technorati Ranks are given to a blog based on how many blogs linked to you in the last 6 months. This number which was recently termed as 'Authority' determines your rank. One link is counted from a Single blog irrespective of how many times it linked to you.

To get a rank of 100 on Technorati you need to have about 4820 blogs linking to you. Blogs already on Top 100 have taken years to reach this position, then how could you do it in 24 hours! Well that's I am coming to...

The page that showed how many blogs linked to my blog caught my eyes... I had three of links from a Single Independent Blog showing Different Authorities besides them. Obviously they were indentified by Technorati as three different blogs even if they were actually part of the same blog. A probe into the matter revealed that links to each other within these types of sub-blogs (to give it a name) were also counted as Authority to the other. Where did Technorati went wrong? Let's get on to it...

Example shown assumes that you are using Wordpress as the blog application, have Apache installed with mod-rewrite activated. Though the Appication/Provider is not a concern, Mod-rewrite is a must here.

Say you have a blog www.exampleblog.com URLs to your posts would look like

http://www.exampleblog.com/ ( The main page )
http://www.exampleblog.com/2007/05/05/a-typical-post/ ( for a typical post )
http://www.exampleblog.com/2007/05/05/ ( All posts posted in a single day )
http://www.exampleblog.com/2007/05/ ( Post Archives for a Month )
http://www.exampleblog.com/tag/a-category/ ( All posts for a single category )
http://www.exampleblog.com/a-typical-page/ ( A typical page )

Technorati is intelligent enough to find that all the above links correspond to a single blog... except for... for the last case... a typical PAGE. If there was a link in a page to your blog/post, it will count as a separate authority for your blog, if..., Technorati knows that this page existed...

Confused! Well... we are getting to it...

When you publish a new post the Technorati server is pinged by calling the page http://rpc.technorati.com/rpc/ping , following which, Technorati extracts the URL from the Header(Referrer) and gets the page content extracting links on the page and storing them in database. This however does not happen when you publish a PAGE. Workaround is that you manually ping Technorati by giving the URL of the new page that we just created on form available at http://technorati.com/ping and doing so, you added +1 to the Authority of your blog.

So Add a page "Begin With Me" to your blog with a link to one of your posts, it will publish to URL http://www.exampleblog.com/begin-with-me/. Open the Technorati Ping page http://technorati.com/ping , post the page url and submit. Within a few minutes your page would be fetched by Technorati and will be visible on the page http://technorati.com/search/www.exampleblog.com. The Rank would however may take upto 24 hours to update as they are not calculated on-the-fly but at regular interval perhaps once or twice a day.

The pages that you ping need not compulsorily appear somewhere on blog pages, and they may be hidden from a visitor/spider (not linked from anywhere. You can achieve this by removing the Page widget from the Sidebar. Or alternatively you can create such pages as a child to a hidden page (a page that after getting published was edited and saved as Draft page). The page you add may be created just blank without any links and the links on the sidebar can compensate for them.

Will that make me to Top 100?

Oh that depends on how fast you are in creating pages and pinging the URLs to Technorati, and how fast is Technorati in removing this bug. They may restrict manual pinging per IP address or temporarily withdraw the ping form before going for fixes, and above all ban your site from Technorati.

You have been shown the way, see if you can make it to the destination.

Yesterday I came across a post Math for the Masses on Wordpress.com, announcing the avaibility of Latex on Wordpress.com . I should learn it, I thought, and started searching for good tutorials to get me started. I got good ones, particularly Short Math Guide for Latex by Michael Downes, that helped me to start. However all sources were not relevant for Latex as implemented on Wordpress.com, (i.e. most of codes on beginning pages did not work on Wordpress.com). I searched hard to find a tutorial that could start from start, and couldn’t. Now that I have started learning successfully, I though if I could fill this gap.

Latex is designed to help authors write the content without much worrying of how it would reproduce on page. If I had to write constantly on a single line, as I have been doing till now on this post then there is not concern but what if I need to go above or below the line. Of course HTML tags for SubScript and SuperScript would have helped but Latex does more so lets get started with Latex, the SubScript and SuperScript.

Latex code on Wordpress.com post should start with $latex and end with a $. To make a character Subscript or Superscript you can add an underscore "_" or an accent "^" respectively. See codes below and their respective Latex rendering.

$latex H_2O$
$latex H_2O$

$latex 2^n+1$
$latex 2^n+1$

You might have noticed that only one character that immediately follows the "_" or "^" is shifted from its position. What if you wanted it to do it for more than one character say whole of n+1 above? You can achieve that by enclosing them between curly braces { } which can be used everywhere you need to group a particular set of characters and can be nested.

$latex 2^{n+1}$
$latex 2^{n+1}$

So these were the most basic things about latex. Latex have a number of commands that start with a backslash "". Here is the first command that shows the Latex logo.

$latex LaTeX$
$latex LaTeX$

All the Latex command are case sensitive. So if you make any mistake in that, you will end up with a error note, like below, instead of the desired and expected rendering.
$latex latex$

Let's get on to next command "frac" which will help you render fractions. This command expects two values to be passed just after it. If you need to render 1/2 the command can be either of the below commands, both will render identically.
$latex frac12$
$latex frac{1}{2}$ (For clarity)
$latex frac12$

You can use frac command to create more complex fractions as the one below:
$latex frac{a+b}{c+d}$
$latex frac{a+b}{c+d}$

Now let's add up all above to form the Compound Interest Formula.
$latex A=P(1+frac{R}{100})^t$
$latex A=P(1+frac{R}{100})^t$

Using "sqrt" command you can render the Square root sign as below
$latex h = sqrt{l^2 + b^2}$
$latex h = sqrt{l^2 + b^2}$

sqrt command in extended form can be used to form Cube root and others too
$latex sqrt[3]{xyz}$
$latex sqrt[3]{xyz}$

If you want to render trigonomertical formulas then "alpha", "beta", "theta", "sin", "cos", "tan" etc. commands can help you get them
