Google PowerMeter

image A time not too long ago we used to have power meters having aluminum discs. Then came along electronic meters and all people were forced to adapt the new meter at their own costs. People protested. Why should they pay for something that’s going to benefit just the electricity provider. And now it’s time for the new “Smart Meters”. While US already have millions of Smart Meters installed other countries are also catching up.

Using “Smart Meters” the electricity/power provider gets real-time data of power usage at each subscribers location. Now the same question arises again

“What good is that meter for the consumer?”

“Google PowerMeter” is the proposed answer. Google PowerMeter is a prototype currently being tested with limited subscribers in US. The utility/power company that powers you needs to arrange with Google. The data that is sent by your Smart Meter is then shared with Google who provides consumers a near real-time graph of your usage using gadgets on your personalized Google Home page (iGoogle)

When will Smart Meters come to India or at least Mumbai? In an attempt to search answer I reached a page, which if is believed, Smart Meters are already installed at Locations powered by Reliance Energy (Infra) since at least last two years! So are we going to see our electricity usage in near future?

  1. I use a Power Meter myself, and it is really helpful because it allows me to see how much energy my appliances use so I can reduce my energy bill.
