Unicode Standard

As already mentioned in Characters, Glyphs and Fonts, the Computers were originally designed to work with a limited set of characters. Each character being defined by a 8 bit number, allowed maximum 256 characters including Null Character. Taken all characters from Ramon alphabets, the numbers, punctuations, currency marks, diacritical marks, border characters, multiple languages etc gave birth to different encoding schemes. The same number represented more than one character, or a same character got different number in different encoding schemes.
