The world is a small place

Filed under: FlashBack — Jalaj @ 8:42 am

The world is a small place, and we often meet those who were lost in crowd.

When I was in my Third semester, My cousins came over and said “Are you going to college on Saturday? We are going to fill up the forms for NIIT’s BhavishyaJyoti Scholarship exam which is on Sunday” Since attending my college, which was in other city Ujjain 54 KMs away, required travelling more than 100KMs, I needed to skip classes for the day to fill up the form. Thankfully I did!

Filed under: FlashBack — Jalaj @ 10:45 am

While studying at Saugor, we were taught a term “Dry Run” where you debug and check execution of programs on desk instead of the Computer itself. After moving to Indore, I took to program this way, as I had no system to run on it. And this helped me avoiding getting away from Computers.

The Windows Registry

Filed under: Registry — Jalaj @ 8:00 am

One of my favourite activities has been tweaking the system configuration files. the INI files in Win3.1 and the Registry in Win95 onwards. What are these? A Magic Wand?? you change a registry entry, and whoop! the windows or an application changes its way of working… No!! It’s only a place where windows and other applications record some critical and some informational configuration settings, which they again refer to when they execute. One of the registry tweaking tool claimed that a registry setting which stops Registry Tools from executing, fails to stop the said tool. It was just that the tool itself should have referred to that entry before executing and acted accordingly.

Filed under: Google, Internet — Jalaj @ 8:42 am

Most of the users use only the basic searching capabilities of Google and thus find searching difficult compared to that if they had done with Google’s advanced searching. The “Advanced Search” screen is displayed if you click on “Advanced Search” link on the main google page or search results.

My time with BBC Micro

Filed under: FlashBack — Jalaj @ 11:33 am

Just after we had made our first visit to the computer room we were handed a textbook “The Basics of BASIC”. The book had all that I needed to make my next visit to Computer Room, next week, worthwhile. I quickly went through all programming concepts and prepared a few small programs using LET, INPUT and PRINT. My friends Pamit and Aditya also came up with theirs’ (one system was shared between three). When we entered the room with our paper slips, our Teacher Mr. Vikas Vaze smiled and said “How will you try all these?”. “We will do all one by one” was our answer. Pamit, who had practice over typewriter sat in the middle typing the programs and we two on the sides reciting them. Impressed, sir opened access to Computer Room after school hours, and to make full use of the privilage, we took to coming school by bicycle instead of School Bus. We called ourselves, the APJ group borowing our name initials.
